How to Test PC Ram

Computers, we hate them and we love them but we hate them when the RAM has problems. We will go through together helping you test your RAM.

Get Memtest86+
. Memtest86+ is an open source program so it is legal to get. And burn it to a blank CD or put it on a flash drive if the computer can boot from flash drives. The official download site is here. However don't confuse with the original meetest, which is outdated.

  • To download click on 'prebuilt- & ISOs'. If you are using windows select 'Pre-Compiled Bootable ISO (.zip)' for other operating systems select 'Pre-Compiled Bootable ISO (.gz)'. If you want a program to automatically write it to a USB drive and you are running Windows, click on 'Auto-installer for USB Key (Win 9x/2k/xp/7)'. All these aforementioned files will be compressed and require decompression.
  • Be sure to download the latest version i.e. the one under the heading with the biggest number.
Turn on the computer; press F8, F1, F12 or whatever your computer's BIOS access key is and got to boot settings and put the cd/DVD drive (all computers have a different drive type. Example: CD-RW, CD/DVD-RW and soon) or USB Ports.

Save the new BIOS settings and reset the computer.

Once it begins to start up again at the boot screen for the computer NOT Windows. Immediately put the cd into the cd/DVD tray and if it asks to boot from the CD press enter.
  • Memtest86 will automatically start. The screen has five sections of information. Three at the top are labeled, PASS %, TEST %, and TEST Number. This shows you progress of the current test is running, the overall progress of that test, and the test it's currently performing.
  • On the middle left-hand side of the of Memtest86, there is a “Wall Time” section that keeps track of how long the diagnostic test has been running for. This just gives an idea if you are not attending the testing process (and having a nice time drinking lemonade).
  • The main section to look for is the lower half of the screen which is usually blank. As long as the memory testing is going ok with no errors at all this section of the screen should remain totally blank. If the diagnostic program finds any serious faults in the memory you will see it display a memory dump in this section. This is similar to what is displayed on your screen when you encounter a blue screen of death on any Windows operating system.
  • If something came up then you need to send the computer to the manufacture or a computer repair shop for repair. If not the RAM is fine but something in the computer is having a problem then you still need to go send the computer to the manufacture or a computer repair shop for repair.
